So I ran across a story about a new cut from Phife Dawg and planned to put it out there on FB, IG and Twitter. Then I listened to it. I mean I really listened to it…a few times and damn…it’s dope. Before his passing, The 5 Foot Assassin was working on new material and the interwebs were treated to a flavorful taste in the form of the J Dilla produced “Nutshell.” In a nutshell: BANGIN’! The track boasts a heavy, simplistic bass line backed by a sparse kick, snare drum arrangement that would make a man with no neck bob his head. Phife dominates the track with a repeat prefix style (“Undefeated, unblemished, under rated. Unfiltered, unafraid, unaffected…) that, if you forgot, reminds us just WHY he’s the 5 Foot Assassin. With sick cuts by Atlanta’s own DJ Rasta Root and some ill jazz inserts, this cut sounds like it could have been a lost track from Beats, Rhymes and Life…minus Q-Tip of course. With a touching video treatment executive produced by Dion Liverpool and featuring the likes of Redman, Jarobi, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, Rakim and a host of others, we are reminded that we lost one of hip-hop’s dopest emcees and dopest producers far too soon. Press play, take a listen and grab “Give Thanks” when it drops. Oh, and don’t forget to leave your opinions below.
